Covenant Institute

Covenant Institute is a Non-Governmental Organization focusing on working with conflict-affected communities across southeast Myanmar. The institute was established in 2017 and is both registered nationally as well as in Kayin State. The organization also maintains a field office in Taungoo and has a liaison officer in Hpa-An.

Our main focus is empowering and assisting conflict-affected communities in the sectors of agriculture, livelihoods, education, community development and governance. We are also engaged in research activities related to peace and conflict, displacement and community living conditions. The institute also provides conflict-sensitivity advice/support to other development partners. In 2022, Covenant Institute has been implementing projects in the southeast of Myanmar in partnership with UNDP and ILO, as well as a number of local organizations.

What We Do

Vocational training

Covenant Institute passionately believes in the benefits that Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses are able to provide in securing livelihoods.  Specifically:

  • Promoting employability of vulnerable people, for domestic and migrant work.
  • Enhancing knowledge, skills and capabilities of local communities
  • Reducing the risks of undesirable coping strategies to fragile circumstances. These risks include increased levels of violence and abuse, increased cases of human trafficking, child labour and other forms of unacceptable employment, all of which could lead to instability and could negatively affect local peace.

Covenant Institute has established local partners, ready to offer TVET courses, located in:

  • Tanintharyi Region
  • Karen State
  • Mon State
  • Eastern Bago Division
  • Southern Shan State

Our TVET partners have offered taught course in a range of subjects and are able to meet donor priorities whether that is: Food security (gardening, cooking & bakery), Construction (Masonry, Carpentry), Clothing (Sewing, Weaving), or transportation (Mechanics).  Additional skills also taught have included IT training, Entrepreneurship, Job placement support, Business development, Life skills training, Safe migration and labour rights

  • TVET courses can be either short term (6 to 8 weeks) or long term (3 to 4 months)
  • Courses can be taught in Burmese or in a local language.
